Book Blurb: (Goodreads)
From #1 New York Times bestselling author duo Erin Watt comes the addictive contemporary tale of a teen rock star in need of an image makeover and the teen girl hired to be his fake girlfriend.
Meet Oakley Ford-teen celebrity, renowned pop star, child of famous movie stars, hottie with millions of fangirls… and restless troublemaker. On the surface he has it all, but with his home life disintegrating, his music well suddenly running dry, and the tabloids having a field day over his outrageous exploits, Oakley’s team decides it’s time for an intervention. The result: an image overhaul, complete with a fake girlfriend meant to show the world he’s settled down.
Enter seventeen-year-old Vaughn Bennett-devoted sister, part-time waitress, the definition of “normal.” Under ordinary circumstances she’d never have taken this gig, but with her family strapped for cash, she doesn’t have much of a choice. And for the money Oakley’s team is paying her, she figures she can put up with outlandish Hollywood parties and a team of publicists watching her every move. So what if she thinks Oakley’s a shallow, self-centered jerk? It’s not like they’re going to fall for each other in real life…right?
After reading the Royals I couldn’t wait to see what Erin Watt did next! At first I found myself comparing When It’s Real to The Royals Series. I had to remind myself that this story was something new, and in my opinion for a completely different age group. Once I was able to separate this from the Royals, I found I really enjoyed it!
This book is a quick read that grabs your attention right from the beginning. You can’t help but get caught up in the characters. The story focuses on Oakley, teen celebrity, and Vaughn, just your average girl. The Erin Watt duo has an amazing talent for creating a cast of characters that you just can’t help but become a little bit obsessed with. The main characters were well-rounded, flawed and interesting. The progression of the relationship between Oakley and Vaughn was so well-paced and I was soooo happy that this wasn’t an insta-love situation! The secondary characters were equally as compelling and I’m secretly hoping that Paisley and Tyrese get their own novel!
When It’s Real stirs up all sorts of emotions which really, I should just come to expect for Erin Watt! While this book could be classified as predictable, it didn’t really seem to matter to me because I was absolutely hooked anyway! I knew how things would end up but the journey to get there was packed with some adorable moments and some classic teen drama! If you enjoy a light and romantic YA novel this is absolutely the book for you! Definitely a great book to check out this summer while you’re lying on the beach!!
